Easter in Playa del Carmen

Yesterday was Easter, the culmination of a week of festivities for Catholic Mexicans. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is Mexico’s version of Spring Break. All the schools have the week off, government offices close down and many businesses give their employees a vacation. Mexicans flock to the beaches, and Playa del Carmen was no exception.

We headed to the beach yesterday to join the hordes. Here’s the scene we encountered.

Our first view of the beach from Calle 38 near Shangri-La Hotel.

What a wonderful sand replica of Chichen Itza!

Mr. Sand Turtle has Corona bottle caps for eyes.

Looking back at Shangri-La.

The empty spot of sand between Shangri La and Kool Beach Club was very popular with beachgoers.

Kool and Mamita’s Beach clubs were packed!

Just south of the beach clubs.

In contrast, there were plenty of chairs available at the all-inclusive Gran Porto Real resort.

Looking back at the mayhem from the Gran Porto.

We had a wonderful time at the beach despite the crowds. The sand was soft, the sun was shining, the sky a brilliant blue, and the water a refreshing aquamarine. Aaaah!

Vibrant Beach Clubs

The summers in Playa del Carmen are sizzling hot, but the tourists just keep on coming. Playa is hopping right now! As usual, visitors have come from all over the world, but we are especially seeing a lot of Mexicans right now.

Yesterday, after lunch at La Fragata with the lovely Marissab, I took a little walk to check out the action on the beach. Kool and Mamitas beach clubs were particularly vibrant, packed with people and energy! See for yourself.

North End Beach & Condos

Tropical Storm Dolly has brought us some rain and gloom the last couple of days. I haven’t gone out for a walk, but as luck would have it, I have some photos from Saturday just before the clouds came in.

In my last entry, I walked 5th Avenue from Calle 38 north to Ave CTM. In this walk, I took Calle 38 towards the beach to explore the area just east of there. This area is full of condos, some a few years old and many currently under construction.

The first place I encountered was La Cueva del Chango. This is a great breakfast spot in a pretty and unique setting.

I’m back! Still a bit sick, but I was itching to get out! So, I met up with Biz this morning to hang the new In The Roo banner up at Bad Boys. Biz hung it, I watched.

Let’s Hit the Beach

Today, we set out to have lunch at Bad Boys for their Wednesday special, Southern Fried Chicken. We had been planning this ever since we realized we missed it last Wednesday! There’s no real fried chicken around these parts, so I was totally psyched when I learned that Bad Boys had it on their menu. Upon arrival, I asked the waiter if they truly did had Southern Fried Chicken today. He assured me that they were serving today’s special. Yes! I could already taste the crunchy, greasy goodness!

We ordered margaritas. The marg on the left is a small marg on the rocks with fresh lime juice and Don Julio. At $50 pesos, it was quite tasty. On the right, is the standard marg — large, frozen, house tequila, $70 pesos. Tasted pretty nasty IMO, but John managed to drink it down.
